Petrochemicals

Overview »

Petrochemicals are chemicals made from petroleum (crude oil) and natural gas. Petroleum and natural gas are made up of hydrocarbon molecules, which are comprised of one or more carbon atoms, to which hydrogen atoms are attached.
Currently, oil and gas are the main sources of the raw materials because they are the least expensive, most readily available, and can be processed most easily into the primary petrochemicals listed on the left.
Only about five percent of the oil and gas consumed each year is needed to make all the petrochemical products.
Petrochemicals have had a dramatic impact on our food, clothing, shelter, and leisure. Some synthetics, tailored for particular uses, actually perform better than products made by nature because of their unique properties.

Investment - why? »

The largest petrochemical industries are to be found in the USA and Western Europe, though the major growth in new production capacity is in the Middle East and Asia. There is a substantial inter-regional trade in petrochemicals of all kinds.
With recent record breaking oil prices and high natural gas prices, the opportunity to invest and prosper from oil and gas production has become very attractive to investors. There are two primary methods of investing in oil and gas. The first is through stock ownership in an oil and gas company. The second is through direct participation (ownership) in one or several wells. Most people are familiar with stock ownership. However, many people are not familiar with a Direct Participation investment. To put it in a nutshell, private investors own a portion of the well and receive a corresponding share of the income generated by the well. The investment benefit derived by ownership is paid to the investor without income taxes being deducted.
